Why we do what we do
Is a Zest Life retreat for you?

You may know the idea, made famous by the writer Simon Sinek: people don't buy what you do, or even how you do it. They buy why you do it.I think about this a lot, especially now. There is so much noise in the world, and no shortage of it around retreats. The last thing we want to do is add to it. That's why every post, every blog, every newsletter we send has a purpose — and hopefully, in some way, adds something to your life rather than taking from it.
The retreat industry is vast, and it isn't all the same
You already know a retreat is a luxury purchase. You probably also know that "retreat" can mean wildly different things depending on who's running it. We've heard the stories — retreats with no real planning behind them, hosts figuring out the day as they go, standards that slip once the doors are open. We've built Zest Life over fifteen years specifically so that none of that ever describes us.
We also know the opposite end exists, genuinely beautiful operations, cold plunges, rooftop yoga spaces, remote islands. The industry is booming, and it can feel overwhelming to choose from the outside.
Here's how we think about it: retreats are a bit like music. There's heavy metal and there's classical, and neither is wrong, they're just for different people, different moods, different moments. Retreats run the same way, from bargain hostel-style breaks to high-end wellness weeks and everything between. The job isn't to find the "best" one. It's to find the one that fits you, your needs, your budget, your timing, and what you actually want out of the time away.
Zest Life is right for you if:
- You'd rather be in nature than in a spa treatment room
- You'd rather be in the sea than sunbathing next to it
- You choose a small group over a large crowd
- You want peaceful places, not an urban mini-break
- You want everything done for you, not something to plan yourself
- You want an itinerary that's sorted, not one you have to arrange
- You want nothing left to buy or organise once you arrive
- You'd choose an early night over a late one
That's the difference between a small group wellness retreat and a big commercial one. It shows up in the detail. None of the above means less joy — quite the opposite. It's where the joy actually starts: rising early, noticing the sunrise, the birdsong, the bees, the quiet. Slowing down enough to actually feel something.
Built on experience, not a lab
Our retreats aren't science-backed. They're built from fifteen years of experience, shaped by wise people who understand how to create the conditions for joy, peace, ease — and sometimes healing.
Who we're for
Most of our guests are women in their fifties and beyond, which is exactly who our retreats for women over 50 are built for. Why this demographic? I think it's because most women have spent a lifetime serving, helping and caring for others, putting their own needs last — and there's a wave of women now saying, quite firmly, no more. "I deserve wellness. I deserve to feel good. I deserve to feel energised, and I'll do what it takes to get there, even if that means taking myself off on a retreat for a few days to recharge."
These women know that isn't selfish. Meeting your own needs isn't indulgence — it's preservation.
We attract women in a new season of life — some with an empty nest, some newly retired — who have so much life left in them and refuse to be boxed in. Women who still love to swim, hike, run and jump, and want to do it alongside people who understand why.
That's the why. But a why has to live somewhere. For us, it lives in the places we choose, and the people who fill them.
The Places We Choose
We believe the places we take you to mean everything. Over the years we've visited hundreds of retreat venues — a bit like going on hundreds of first dates. Everything looks right in the photographs, and then you arrive and you know within the first minute whether it's a yes. If it isn't an unmistakable yes, it's a no. We only work with places that make you exhale.
When we say "place," we mean two things: the country and the venue. We work in a small handful of countries — that may grow one day, but for now the places we take you to are relatively easy to reach, don't cost the earth to get to, and in several cases you can reach by car or train rather than a long-haul flight.
I learned early in adulthood that nature was central to healing. Walking in nature healed me first. Swimming and cold water followed, and that was a different thing entirely. Being somewhere that genuinely inspires you does something particular — it makes you feel small and significant at the same time. Grateful, and steady.
The beauty of a sunrise reflects something already in you. So does the age of an old oak tree, or the stillness of a lake on a misty morning. Nature has a way of reminding you what you're capable of. That's why we only choose places that bring on wonder, and a kind of calm you can't manufacture indoors.
The People Who Make It
Of course, we have a team — and building it has been something of an experiment. Trusting people to hold the space, guide the group and feed everyone well isn't something you get right by guessing. Some of that trial and error has taught us a great deal. What we have now is a team that works well together and delivers on every front: leaders who bring out your best, who know their craft properly, and who are genuinely good, easy people to talk to. Strong characters, all of them, who hold space with real care.
But the people aren't just the team. They're the guests too.
In all our years running retreats, there has been exactly one guest who wasn't the right fit — he left after the first night. Everyone else who has joined us has brought something worth having: a story, a lesson learned the hard way, a joy, sometimes a weight they needed to share. Some of the conversations that have happened around our tables are among the most honest I've ever been part of. Where else do you get twelve people, all different ages and walks of life, who share the same values and speak the same language when it comes to what actually matters?
One of our retreats has now repeated for six years running, and the group that met on the very first one has come back every single year since. You know who you are, if you're reading this. They may not speak to each other much the rest of the year — and then they're back at that one venue, and something happens all over again.
People make a retreat. We're lucky enough to attract the right ones.
So, why do we do it
We run retreats because women deserve somewhere to put the stress down and feel peace and ease again. Our values come from years of learned experience, not from following trends. We choose our places with no compromise. We choose our people the same way. Together, that's what actually holds you.
And because, after fifteen years, 2,500 guests and over 300 retreats, we know we're good at it.
That’s the why. Everything else is just the how.
